Colorado Elk Hunt 2009Sep 17, 2009

My fall hunting season always starts with Elk hunting in Colorado, and this year, Jesse and I get to stay a solid three weeks with Bob Daugherty and his crew at Redwing Outfitters.  I decided that, since we are staying so long, we needed to travel prepared for anything. With that in mind, we packed up our 40’ trailer front to back with everything we needed, and headed out on the road.  When we arrived, Bob and his top guide Urbano were waiting and excited about a new year of elk camp.

We get to see this view every day!

During our stay, two big groups of hunters come and go through camp, so I decided that we should have our own “bunk house”.  We put up a big 12’ X 20’ wall tent, and listen to the elk bugle all night long!

Putting up our tent!

We have been here four days, and we have already seen several good bulls, but we haven’t had a big one come close yet. We have however had some good encounters with a few smaller bulls that weren’t quite big enough for me to shoot. That’s okay though, because every encounter that we have is a blast, no matter how big the bull is.

This is a giant elk wallow and when you get up close, it smells like fresh elk!

On our first morning, this small bull walked within 8 yards of us!

Did I mention that there are some big mule deer here!?

Stay tuned for the next two weeks of elk hunting in Southern Colorado!!
